How does the micro1 AI interview work, and how do you prepare?

What happens in the micro1 AI interview?
It is a live, spoken interview with Zara, micro1's AI recruiter. Zara asks open-ended and scenario questions about the specific skills a role needs, and micro1 says it takes 20 to 40 minutes, about 7 minutes per skill, with a coding challenge for technical roles. Practice with micro1's free Interview Prep tool first, because you get one completed interview per role.
Every micro1 applicant goes through Zara. micro1's expert library describes a structured, standardized interview that happens in real time: Zara asks a series of open-ended questions and you answer out loud, as you would with a human interviewer. The session is recorded so micro1's human recruiters can review results and match people to roles. Here is what the interview involves, what happens afterward, and how to give yourself a fair shot, based on micro1's own pages checked on Oct 20, 2026 and on what applicants report.
Where does the interview fit in a micro1 application?
- Apply to a specific role on the opportunities portal. Each role has skill requirements set by micro1's recruiters based on the client's needs, and Zara's questions are built from them. As of Oct 20, 2026, the listing showed 33 hourly law roles at $50 to $350/hr and 32 medicine roles at $45 to $285/hr.
- Take the interview on demand, whenever you are ready. micro1's interview guide says you get "a real-time result" telling you whether you met its certification criteria.
- Wait for review. The talent dashboard shows "Under review" while recruiters check your interview, which it says can take up to 48 hours.
- Verify your ID. If you meet the criteria, you complete your profile and scan an original, unexpired government ID plus a selfie through a third-party provider. micro1 says English or Arabic IDs usually clear within minutes and other languages can take up to 72 hours (next steps after certification).
- Join the certified pool. You get a micro1 certificate and become eligible for matching and invitations (what certification means).
- Hiring manager review. A person then picks the best-fit candidates for the role, which micro1 says can take up to 30 days and does not guarantee a placement.
- Onboard if selected. You accept the offer in your portal and work through an onboarding checklist (how onboarding works), which can include a KarmaCheck identity and background check for the project.
What does Zara ask?
micro1's interview questions page says no two candidates get the same questions. Each interview mixes technical and conversational prompts tailored to your area and the role's required skills, and the difficulty depends on your field and experience. The interview guide lists four types:
- Open-ended technical questions based on the role.
- Scenario-based questions that test how you think, solve problems, and communicate.
- A coding challenge for technical roles.
- A human data exercise for annotator roles.
The examples micro1 publishes are demanding. A physics example asks you to discuss the significance and derivation of Bell's inequalities. A full-stack example asks how you would diagnose a sporadic, high-latency issue across several services and databases. Soft-skill examples include describing a time you disagreed with a team member and how you handled it. Expect to defend real experience in depth, not recite definitions.
Applicants add some detail. In an August 2026 r/micro1_ai post, someone who had taken 12 interviews said Zara asked about topics beyond the role's listed skills and often packed several points into one question, so it helped to break each question into parts and answer every one.
How long does it take?
micro1 says interviews run 20 to 40 minutes depending on how many skills are tested, with about 7 minutes per skill. Its practice interviews are listed at 18 minutes each. Some applicants report longer sessions: the August 2026 poster described 30 to 50 minutes for a full interview and found the steady pace tiring. Set aside an hour in a quiet room so you are not watching the clock.
Can you retake the micro1 interview?
Not for the same role. micro1's library does not describe any retake option, and in two June 2026 r/micro1_ai threads (one, two), replies speaking for micro1 said a submitted interview cannot be retaken or reapplied for, even after 30 days, and apologized that some emails had suggested otherwise. They said you can still apply to other open roles, including separate listings of a similar role.
Two features soften this. Skills you certify carry over: since July 2025, Zara checks your past results against each new role and may skip skills you already certified, test only the missing ones ("Partial interview"), or skip the interview entirely ("Fast-Track"). And because there is one shot per role, the free practice tool matters more here than on most platforms.
What happens if you do not qualify?
Your dashboard shows "Did not qualify." Click that application to request detailed feedback, which micro1 emails to you, covering what went well and what to improve. micro1 says its team may still contact you about other roles. One reply speaking for micro1 in the June 2026 thread added that this status can reflect more than interview performance, such as rate expectations, location constraints, or other role-specific requirements.
Other statuses you may see:
- Hiring manager reviewing: you did well and joined the vetted pool, but placement is not guaranteed. This can last up to 30 days.
- Not selected: you performed well but someone else got the role. You stay eligible for future roles.
- Hiring on hold: hiring for that role is paused.
- Application incomplete: the interview was not finished before the role closed.
micro1 says there is no fixed timeline for any status, and its experts guide says certified experts are typically updated on their application status within 30 days.
How do you prepare?
- Use the Interview Prep tool. It is free: pick the position, take an AI practice interview, and get feedback.
- Choose one core skill or job type to be evaluated on, as micro1's guide suggests, and apply to roles that truly match it.
- Study the whole role, not just the listed skills, since applicants report questions on related topics.
- Answer with specific examples: what the situation was, what you did, and the result. Applicants often recommend the STAR method (situation, task, action, result).
- Address every part of a multi-part question, briefly and in order.
- Be concise. The June 2026 reply speaking for micro1 recommended concise, structured answers focused on the question, and one applicant who passed on a third try said the same.
- Treat it like a real interview: a quiet space, a stable connection, and your camera on, per micro1's experts guide. For coding roles, practice solving problems while talking through your reasoning.
- Apply early and keep your profile current, so recruiters see your strongest skills.
What do applicants say about it?
Reviews are mostly positive about Zara itself. micro1's Trustpilot profile showed 4.7 stars from 10,933 reviews on Oct 20, 2026, with 83% five-star and 3% one-star reviews. micro1 invites reviews, and many describe the interview as conversational and polite. micro1's own candidate tracker reported 4.34 out of 5 across 465,974 reviews, which is micro1's figure, not an independent one.
The complaints are worth reading before you start:
- Lots of interviews, few placements. An October 2026 reviewer said they had more than 30 applications marked "Not Selected" and more than 60 marked "Not Qualified" after a month of daily interviews. Another said 20 applications led to a month stuck on "Awaiting next steps."
- Questions that miss the role. September 2026 reviewers said Zara asked about things unrelated to the advertised title, jumped between roles and topics quickly, and asked questions that depended on a client's internal tools and processes they had no way of knowing.
- Feedback that does not match. One September 2026 reviewer said their feedback asked for concrete examples they had already given.
- Unpaid time. An October 2026 reviewer argued the interviews are a way to collect expert knowledge for free. The interview is unpaid, and passing is not a job offer.
Is it worth doing?
If micro1 lists roles in your field, yes, as long as you treat it like a real interview. It is a chance to get paid for what you know, and the skills you certify can shorten later applications. Practice first, apply only where you fit, and keep other options open while you wait for a hiring manager.
