Is micro1 legit, and how does it pay?
Updated October 16, 2026
Short answer: Yes. micro1 is a real, venture-backed company that pays vetted experts for remote project work, in US dollars, twice a month through the payroll platform Deel. On Oct 16, 2026 it listed roles such as law at $60 to $400/hr and medicine at $45 to $285/hr, though what you earn depends on the role you land and the hours the project has.
Who is behind micro1
micro1 recruits professionals (lawyers, doctors, engineers, scientists, finance people, writers) and places them on paid projects for AI labs and large companies. In September 2025, TechCrunch reported a $35 million Series A at a $500 million valuation, led by 01 Advisors, the firm co-founded by former Twitter executives Dick Costolo and Adam Bain.
On Oct 12, 2026, CEO Ali Ansari wrote on micro1's blog that the company had passed a $1 billion annual run rate, has a core team of about 180 people, and had priced a Series B at a $4 billion valuation led by Dream Ventures, with Microsoft among the participants. The run rate is the company's own figure. Forbes reported the round was more than $100 million, citing people familiar with the deal.
Funding does not tell you what your own experience will be like, but it does answer the basic question: this is an established company with real clients, not a fly-by-night listing.
How you get paid
According to micro1's expert library, you sign a contract through Deel, the payroll platform micro1 uses. Pay periods run from the 1st to the 15th and from the 16th to the end of the month, and payments are processed within 5 days of each period ending. Payments cannot go out until you finish Deel's identity check (KYC).
Your contract sets how you are paid. micro1's FAQ describes three models: hourly (based on approved tracked hours), pay per approved task, and a flat fee per approved deliverable. Work that fails review on a per-task or flat-fee project is not paid, so read the special clauses in your contract.
How hiring works
You apply to specific roles on micro1's opportunities portal, then do a live interview with Zara, micro1's AI interviewer. micro1 says interviews take 20 to 40 minutes depending on how many skills are assessed, and you can request written feedback if you do not qualify (micro1 library). After that comes a government ID check and the contract. micro1's experts guide says certified experts typically hear back on an application within 30 days.
What micro1 lists for pay
micro1 posts pay per role, so the range depends on your field. Here is what its referral listings showed on Oct 16, 2026:
| Field | Open roles | Listed pay |
|---|---|---|
| Law | 38 | $60 to $400/hr |
| Finance | 14 | $80 to $350/hr |

| Accounting | 4 | $30 to $120/hr |

The top of each range usually comes from a handful of senior or specialist roles. Role counts and pay change daily as projects open and close.
What to know before you apply
- Work comes in projects. micro1 says projects run as long as the client has work, and when one ends it tries to move you to a similar one if it exists. Expect gaps.
- You are a contractor. Pay arrives through Deel, and US contractors can find tax forms such as a 1099-NEC in their Deel profile (micro1 FAQ).
- The interview is real. It tests the skills a role asks for, so pick listings that match what you actually know.
- Apply through micro1 itself. Use micro1's own site or a link that lands there. Nobody should charge you to get a role.
