Mercor vs micro1

Updated October 19, 2026

Short answer: Both screen you with an AI interview and then place you on paid contract projects, but they pay on different schedules and accept people from different places. Mercor pays weekly through Stripe and posts a rate on every listing, for example $50 to $60/hour for its Generalist role on Oct 19, 2026 (the listing requires a Mac). micro1 pays twice a month through Deel and also lists pay role by role; on Oct 19, 2026 its 37 law roles listed $60 to $400/hr and its 31 medicine roles $45 to $230/hr.

Who is each one better for?

Mercor tends to suit people who want something close to a part-time contract: a defined project, a weekly hour cap, a project lead, and a payout every week. It works best if your background matches one of its talent networks (law, medicine, finance, software, data, the sciences) and you are fine with screenshot-based time tracking. Its best-known entry-level role, Generalist, asks for a Mac plus either current master's study or 2 to 3 years of experience with a bachelor's degree.

micro1 tends to suit professionals who want to apply role by role in a field where it lists a lot of openings. On Oct 19, 2026 that meant 40 software engineering roles, 37 law roles, 31 medicine roles, and 79 general roles. Its interview also builds a skill profile that can shorten later applications.

How do the AI interviews compare?

Mercor: its interview FAQ says the AI interviewer asks role-specific questions, records a transcript, and scores you for that listing. Most interviews take about 20 minutes. You can take a free practice interview as many times as you like, and it is never shared with companies. Official interviews can be retaken up to three times across every application that uses them, but each retake resets your application progress and hiring managers can see how many you used. You need a computer with Chrome, Edge, or Safari, some interviews require screen sharing, and there is no option to interview with a person instead.

micro1: Zara runs a live interview where you answer open-ended questions out loud, according to the micro1 library. It lasts 20 to 40 minutes, about 7 minutes per skill being tested, and it is recorded so human recruiters can review it. If you get a "Did not qualify" result, you can request written feedback by email. Skills you certified in interviews since July 2025 are reused, so a later application may skip the interview ("Fast-Track") or only test the skills you are missing ("Partial interview"). The dashboard guide says review takes up to 48 hours, and the "Hiring manager reviewing" stage can take up to 30 days without guaranteeing a placement.

How does the pay compare by field?

Neither site has one company-wide rate. Mercor puts a range on each listing on its explore page. These were some of the main ones on Oct 19, 2026:

Mercor listingListed pay
Generalist (must own a Mac)$50 to $60/hour
Lawyer Talent Network$60 to $150/hour
Physician Talent NetworkListed $110 to $250/hour
Nursing Talent Network$60 to $120/hour
Financial Analyst Talent Network$60 to $180/hour
Backend, Frontend, Full-Stack, and DevOps Engineer networks$70 to $150/hour
Machine Learning Engineer Talent Network$70 to $250/hour
Data Scientist Talent Network$100 to $150/hour
Chemist, Biologist, Physicist, and Mathematician networks$60 to $80/hour

Mercor's talent networks are open applications for future projects, not specific jobs, and say typical commitments run 15 to 30 hours a week.

micro1 posts pay on each role, and the top of each field's range usually comes from a handful of senior or specialist listings. For the full field-by-field table, see how much micro1 pays by field. Head to head, using each site's own listings that day:

How do hours and time tracking work?

Mercor sets a maximum number of hours per week in each contract, and the project team has to approve any change. Hourly work must be tracked in the Insightful desktop app, which can take periodic screenshots, and hours that Insightful did not capture are not paid. Under Mercor's pay policy, logged hours can be withheld only for policy violations, spam, or time logged while not working, and a human reviews every case. You have to dispute a removal within the next pay period.

micro1 describes its work as part-time, about 15 to 20 hours a week depending on the client, from your own time zone, and fine to do alongside a full-time job (micro1 FAQ). Hourly projects track time in Hubstaff. Your contract sets one payout model: hourly for approved tracked hours, pay per task (your hourly rate times a "Project Payout Multiple"), or a flat fee per approved deliverable. Rejected or incomplete per-task and flat-fee work is not paid.

When and how do you get paid?

Mercor pays weekly. The pay week runs Saturday to Friday on India Standard Time, so late-Thursday hours in the Americas can roll into the next week. Payouts are processed by the end of Wednesday Pacific time and most funds arrive Thursday. Stripe is the default, Wise is used in Brazil, Kosovo, the UAE, Nepal, Turkey, and Ghana, and Mercor does not pay through PayPal, Payoneer, or crypto. Stripe holds your first payout for 7 days.

micro1 pays twice a month in US dollars through Deel. Its payroll policy says work from the 1st to the 15th is paid around the 20th, and work from the 16th to the end of the month around the 5th of the next month, with US contractors sometimes waiting one extra business day. You must finish Deel's identity check before any payment goes out (Deel setup).

On both, you are an independent contractor: no taxes are withheld, there are no benefits, and neither promises a set number of hours.

Where can you work from?

Mercor publishes a list of countries where it can pay experts and says it cannot onboard anyone or issue contracts anywhere else. Individual listings can be narrower: on Oct 19, 2026, roles such as Pediatric Emergency / Urgent Care Physician were open to US residents only. Before work starts you also sign a contract and confidentiality agreement, verify your ID with Persona (usually again for each new offer), and clear a background check, which Mercor's onboarding guide says usually takes one to two weeks.

micro1 says on its experts page that it hires worldwide, except people who live in 21 countries and regions it names, including China, Hong Kong, Russia, Ukraine, Iran, Venezuela, and Ethiopia. Individual roles can still add their own location, license, or language requirements. After you pass the interview you verify your ID with a third-party provider (micro1 library), and onboarding includes a background check through KarmaCheck.

What are the honest downsides?

Mercor: projects can end suddenly. In November 2025, Business Insider reported that Mercor ended a Meta project that had more than 5,000 contractors at its peak and offered a replacement at a lower rate. Its Trustpilot profile showed 4.5 stars from 1,199 reviews on Oct 19, 2026, with 73% five-star and 9% one-star reviews, and Mercor invites people to review it. Happy reviewers mention on-time weekly pay. One-star reviews describe sudden offboarding, a weekly cap cut step by step from 40 hours to zero, and many assessments that ended in rejection. Mercor also had a data breach in March 2026 and faces a proposed class action, White v. Mercor.io Corporation, over contractor classification and deducted hours. Those are allegations, not findings.

micro1: its Trustpilot profile showed 4.7 stars from 10,907 reviews on Oct 19, 2026, with 83% five-star and 3% one-star reviews. micro1 invites reviews, and most recent ones rate the interview itself rather than paid work. The one-star reviews describe a different problem: dozens of applications marked "Not Selected" or "Not Qualified," weeks stuck waiting for next steps, signed contracts with no hours afterward, and disorganized onboarding. Passing the interview puts you in a pool; it is not a job offer.
