Is Mercor legit?
Updated October 17, 2026
Short answer: Yes. Mercor is a real, venture-backed company, valued at $10 billion after a $350 million round in October 2025, and it pays contractors weekly through Stripe, or Wise where Stripe is not available. On Oct 17, 2026 its Generalist listing showed $50 to $60/hour. It is legitimate but not risk-free: projects can end with little notice, hours can be removed after review, and a March 2026 data breach led to contractor lawsuits.
Who runs Mercor, and is it a real company?
Mercor is a San Francisco company, founded in 2023, that matches professionals (doctors, lawyers, engineers, scientists, writers, and generalists) with paid contract projects for AI labs and large companies. TechCrunch has reported that its clients include OpenAI and Anthropic.
In October 2025, TechCrunch reported that Mercor raised $350 million at a $10 billion valuation, led by Felicis Ventures, with Benchmark, General Catalyst, and Robinhood Ventures also investing. In July 2026, TechCrunch, citing Bloomberg, reported early talks for a new round at a $20 billion valuation, and CEO Brendan Foody said annualized revenue had passed $2 billion. That revenue number is the company's own claim, and we found no confirmed close of the new round as of Oct 17, 2026.
Mercor's homepage reported $4M+ in daily payouts and 538k roles created on Oct 17, 2026. Those are Mercor's figures, not audited ones. Put together with the funding and the client list, though, the basic answer is clear: this is an established business that really pays people, not a fake listing.
How does Mercor pay you?
Mercor's pay policy says hourly work runs on a weekly cycle from Saturday 12:00 AM to Friday 11:59 PM India Standard Time. Approved hours from that week are processed by the end of the following Wednesday, Pacific time. If you live in the Americas, remember that late Thursday evening is already Friday in India, so hours you log then can roll into the next week.
- Payment method: Stripe is the default. Wise is used where Stripe is not available, which Mercor lists as Brazil, Kosovo, the United Arab Emirates, Nepal, Turkey, and Ghana. Mercor says it does not pay through PayPal, Payoneer, or crypto.
- First payout: Stripe holds your first payout for 7 days. After that, payouts follow the weekly schedule.
- When money arrives: Mercor says most experts receive funds 2 to 10 days after processing, depending on the provider and bank.
- Time tracking: Hourly projects use the Insightful desktop app, which can take periodic screenshots. Mercor's contract policy says hours not captured in Insightful are not eligible for pay.
- Weekly caps: Each contract sets a maximum number of hours per week, so you cannot simply work more to earn more.
What does Mercor pay?
Rates are set per project and shown on each listing. On Oct 17, 2026, Mercor's explore page listed its Generalist role at $50 to $60/hour, and a batch of new specialist chemistry and engineering roles at $65 to $75 per task. Some projects pay per task or per deliverable instead of per hour, so check how the rate is defined before you compare offers.
The homepage also shows an "average contracted rate," which read $111/hr on Oct 17, 2026. That is an average across Mercor's experts, pulled up by highly paid specialists. It is not what a typical person earns. For listed rates by field, see how much Mercor pays.
How does Mercor hiring work?
You apply on work.mercor.com, upload a resume, and finish whatever steps a listing asks for, which usually includes a recorded AI interview. Mercor's interview FAQ says most interviews take about 20 minutes. You can take a free practice interview as often as you like, and you can retake an official interview up to three times, but hiring managers can see your retake count. The AI interview is Mercor's only screening method, so there is no option to talk to a person instead.
If you are selected, onboarding covers an independent contractor agreement, a tax form, payment setup, and installing Insightful. You are a contractor, not an employee, so there are no benefits and nobody promises you a set number of hours.
What are the real downsides?
Projects can end suddenly
In November 2025, Business Insider reported that Mercor ended a large Meta project codenamed Musen, which had more than 5,000 people at its peak, citing "project scope changes." Contractors were then offered a similar project, Nova, at $16 an hour, $5 less than Musen paid. Forbes reported that workers found themselves locked out of the project's Slack. Recent Trustpilot reviews describe the same thing on a smaller scale: contracts paused the same day and little warning when a project closes.
Hours can be removed after review
Mercor's policy says logged hours can be withheld for policy violations, spam or low-effort work, or time logged while not actively working, and that a human reviews each case before hours are removed. You have to dispute a removal within the next pay period, and the decision is final. A proposed class action filed in federal court in Texas in 2026, White v. Mercor.io Corporation, alleges that Mercor misclassifies workers as contractors and deducts hours that should be paid. Those are allegations, not court findings.
The March 2026 data breach
In late March 2026, Mercor confirmed to TechCrunch that it was hit by a supply-chain attack through LiteLLM, an open source tool used by thousands of companies. Within a week, contractors had filed five lawsuits over the breach, according to Business Insider. Mercor later said its investigation found that only a very limited subset of its nearly five million experts had sensitive information affected, that it saw no evidence of fraudulent use, and that it notified affected people on June 25 and 26 with an offer of identity protection. Applying means sharing ID, tax, and bank details plus interview recordings, so weigh that before you sign up.
What reviewers say
Mercor's main Trustpilot profile (mercor.io) showed a 4.5 rating from 1,184 reviews on Oct 17, 2026, with 73% five-star and 9% one-star reviews. Mercor invites people to review it there, which tends to lift scores. Positive reviews mostly mention on-time weekly pay and helpful project leads. Negative ones describe sudden offboarding, unstable hours, being accepted to a project and then given no tasks, and unpaid onboarding. A separate, much smaller mercor.com profile had a 2.5 rating from only 5 reviews.
How to spot a fake Mercor offer
Mercor says it never charges talent a fee to apply, interview, or start work. Official email comes only from addresses ending in @mercor.com, and payment setup happens only on work.mercor.com. If someone claiming to be Mercor asks you to pay, buy equipment, or enter bank details on another site, it is a scam. If you already paid, contact your bank.
Who is Mercor a good fit for?
Mercor makes the most sense if you have specific, provable expertise, such as a license, an advanced degree, or years of work in a field, and you are comfortable with project-based income. It is a real way to get paid for what you know, but treat it as flexible income, not a steady paycheck. Hours depend on the project, caps limit what you can log, and work can stop between projects. Keep your own record of the hours you work, and read each offer's rate, weekly cap, and pay structure before you start.
