What is the Mercor AI interview like?

What should you expect from the Mercor AI interview?
A recorded video conversation with an AI interviewer. It asks role-specific questions, often about your own resume, and Mercor says most interviews take about 20 minutes. You need a desktop browser with your camera and microphone on, and some interviews also need full-screen sharing. You can practice for free as often as you like and retake the real one up to three times, but hiring managers can see your retake count.
Most Mercor applications include an AI interview. According to Mercor's interview FAQ, the interviewer asks role-specific questions, produces a transcript of your answers, and scores you for that listing. There is no option to interview with a person, by chat, or by phone, but you only take each unique interview once: if another application uses the same interview, your result carries over. Everything below was checked against Mercor's own help pages on Oct 20, 2026.
Where does the interview fit in a Mercor application?
Mercor's application guide lays out the order:
- Pick a listing. Each one on the explore page shows its own rate. On Oct 20, 2026, the Generalist role was listed at $50 to $60/hr (the listing requires a Mac), and the Physician Talent Network was listed at $110 to $250/hr.
- Click Apply now. You get a checklist: upload your resume, complete the required assessments, and confirm your work authorization. Steps differ by role.
- Take the AI interview from that checklist, whenever suits you. Progress saves, but listings can close at any time.
- Finish any extra steps. Some roles add a written form, a timed task, or a short paid assessment.
- Submit. A confirmation screen shows your submission and the expected timeline.
Talent networks work a little differently. The Lawyer Talent Network page, for example, says it is "not a specific job posting" but an open application: once you complete your profile and pass the AI interview, you become eligible for matching projects as they come up.
Your resume matters more than it might seem, because the interviewer draws on it. Mercor asks for a text-based PDF of one to two pages, under 2 MB, with a simple layout and clear section headings.
What does the AI interviewer ask?
Mercor does not publish its questions, and it asks candidates not to share specific questions or screenshots online, so treat any "question bank" you find with suspicion. What its FAQ does say:
- Questions are tailored to the listing. Some interviews are technical and dig deep into your past experience; others test language or reasoning skills.
- Some interviews include a whiteboard, which saves automatically, and some require you to share your entire screen.
- Interviews are in English unless the listing says otherwise, and captions are on by default.
- Mercor suggests having pen and paper, plus a calculator if relevant.
Length varies by listing. The FAQ says most take about 20 minutes, while the Generalist listing describes "a brief (3-minute) conversation with our AI interviewer to assess research and reasoning skills," followed by a short paid assessment.
In a June 2026 r/mercorai_workers thread, one person said the interviewer pulled from their resume and asked what they learned from a caregiving gap. A software applicant in a January 2026 r/mercor_ai thread described separate system design and code review interviews, including one where the code sample never appeared on screen.
What do you need before you start?
The interview runs in a waiting room with setup checks. Two are required before the Start interview button unlocks: a working microphone (you read a phrase out loud) and, only for interviews that need it, sharing your entire screen rather than a window or tab. Checks for face in frame, lighting, a sharp camera, and a steady camera help the recording but do not block you.
- Browser: Google Chrome is recommended; Edge and Safari are supported. Firefox and mobile browsers are not.
- Room: quiet, with a stable connection. If the interviewer freezes, Mercor suggests waiting 30 to 60 seconds, refreshing, and turning off VPNs and ad blockers.
Can you practice or retake it?
Yes, within limits. The Practice Interview is free, is not tied to any application, is never shared with companies, and can be taken as many times as you like. Take it at least once.
For the real interview, you can retake it up to three times across every application that uses it, from the Assessments tab. Keep these rules in mind:
- A retake resets your application progress, and only your most recent attempt is reviewed, so a weaker retake replaces a stronger first try.
- The waiting room asks you to save retakes for technical problems, and hiring managers can see how many you used.
- An attempt that ends much earlier than planned is marked "Interview too short," does not count, and must be retaken, which uses up one of your retakes.
Other assessments are stricter. Mercor's assessments guide says most allow a single submission, and ones that cannot be retaken open read-only once you submit.
What is Mercor looking for?
The assessments guide says Mercor evaluates your domain expertise, how you approach real-world problems, how you follow instructions and handle ambiguity, and how clear your written or spoken answers are. Two listings can score the same assessment differently, and human reviewers may check results.
Mercor's LLM usage policy allows a chatbot only for light grammar and wording checks, not for composing answers, rating model responses, writing explanations, or predicting what code does.
How do you prepare?
- Do the Practice Interview first so the format, captions, and pacing are not a surprise.
- Reread your resume. Be ready to talk about every role, project, and gap on it, with specifics.
- Lead with your main point, then expand. Mercor says long silences can make the AI jump in. If it interrupts you, you can tell it you were not finished.
- Use concrete examples: what you did, how, and what came of it.
- Apply where you genuinely fit, since scoring is set per listing.
- Set up properly: a computer with a camera, headphones and ideally an external mic, plus paper and a calculator.
- Answer in your own words, and do not end early, or the attempt counts as too short.
What happens after the interview?
Officially, Mercor notifies you when your application moves to the next stage, and it encourages you to keep applying elsewhere on the platform while you wait. The Generalist listing promises follow-up "within a few days." Applicants report a wider spread: in a June 2026 r/mercor_ai thread, one said answers came anywhere from a few hours to two or three weeks, that some rejections never arrive, and that after four weeks of silence they assume a no.
Do not expect detailed feedback. Mercor does not share interview recordings or transcripts, and support does not give out scores. Some assessments email a feedback link; if none arrives, there is none for that one.
If you move forward, the next step depends on the listing:
- A paid work trial. Mercor's work trial guide says each person is paid for only one trial, at a fixed amount, typically processed within 14 business days of review. Payment does not depend on being selected, but low-effort or incomplete work can go unpaid.
- An offer. Onboarding then covers signing the offer letter and agreements, a tax form, ID verification through Persona, a background check (Mercor says these typically take one to two weeks), payment setup, and the Insightful time tracker.
- Instant offers later on. Mercor's instant offers page says strong interview and assessment results can make you "prequalified," so hiring teams may send offers for roles you never applied to. Offers expire if you do not respond.
Why do applications stall or get rejected?
Mercor rarely gives individual reasons, but its own pages point to the common ones:
- The listing closed. If it switches to "Not accepting applications" before you submit, you cannot finish.
- The requirements changed. A step you already did can flip back to Incomplete when a listing adds a new required step.
- Location or work authorization. Many listings, including the Generalist and talent network pages, say Mercor cannot support H-1B or STEM OPT candidates.
- Hardware. The Generalist role requires a Mac running macOS 15 or later.
- Fit. You are scored against what that client needs, and many qualified people apply.
What do applicants complain about?
A frequent complaint in applicant forums is the interviewer itself. In the June 2026 thread, applicants said the AI cut them off when they paused to think, asked vague questions, or asked about experience that was not on their resume. An August 2025 r/mercor_ai thread has similar stories, though a December 2025 reply there said the interview went smoothly.
Mercor's Trustpilot profile showed 4.5 stars from 1,213 reviews on Oct 20, 2026 (73% five-star, 9% one-star), and Mercor invites reviews. One-star reviews posted in October 2026 about applying describe a timed test of 50 questions in 15 minutes that the reviewer felt had nothing to do with the role, a month of waiting followed by rejection on every application, and a claim that the interviews mainly harvest experts' knowledge. On that last point, Mercor's FAQ says interview data is not used to train AI models and is not sold.
Is it worth doing?
If your background matches a listing, yes. It is short, you can rehearse it for free, and one pass can carry over to similar roles.
