What is the most direct way to get paid for a PhD remotely?

Expert contract work for AI labs, where you write hard problems in your field and judge how well models solve them. As of Oct 21, 2026, Handshake AI listed a Chemistry Expert role up to $150/hr, Mercor listed research-level physics roles at $80 to $110/hr, micro1 listed 11 science roles at $45 to $200/hr, and DataAnnotation said STEM projects start at $40 to $125+ per hour. It is project-based, so hours are never guaranteed.

A doctorate is exactly what these platforms find hardest to get: someone who can tell when a confident answer is subtly wrong. This guide covers the four platforms Knackboard tracks, which PhD-level roles each one lists, what they list for pay, who qualifies, and what PhDs say goes wrong. Every rate below was checked on the platform's own pages on Oct 21, 2026. Rates are listed ranges or ceilings, not what you will earn.

What does PhD-level work on these platforms involve?

It is closer to writing and refereeing than to labeling data. Typical tasks:

Which platforms list PhD roles, and what do they pay?

Here is what each platform listed on Oct 21, 2026. Mercor and micro1 rates are the listed range on each role; Handshake AI and DataAnnotation show a ceiling.

Platform and roleListed payWho it asks for
Handshake AI Chemistry ExpertUp to $150/hrPhD students, PhDs, and postdocs in chemistry or a close field
Handshake AI STEM ProfessorUp to $150/hrCurrent or emeritus faculty with an h-index above 20 and 2,000+ citations
Handshake AI Biology ExpertUp to $125/hrBiology PhDs and postdocs, or an MS plus industry experience

Mercor STEM PhDs and Technical Domain ExpertsListed $60 to $120/hrA PhD, advanced degree, or equivalent industry experience in fields such as medicine, statistics, AI research, computer science, or engineering
Mercor physics panel, e.g. High Energy Physicist (PhD)Listed $80 to $110/hrA physics PhD with publications in one of the listed research areas
Mercor Mathematician and Chemist Talent NetworksListed $60 to $80/hrProfessional experience in the field; an open pool for future projects
Mercor STEM Researchers (MSc/PhD)Listed $50 to $60/hrCurrent or completed MSc or PhD in a STEM field; you must own a Mac
micro1 Physics Expert (PhD / Postdoc)$100 to $200/hrA physics PhD or advanced PhD candidacy, with 2 to 5 recent publications
micro1 STEM Expert (MSc./PhD)$60 to $120/hrStrong STEM expertise plus Python; the expertise can come from research, industry, or teaching
micro1 Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Expert (PhD)$45 to $90/hrA PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, or genomics, or equivalent experience, plus Python or R
DataAnnotation Mathematician, Physicist, Chemist, BiologistUp to $125+/hrA graduate-level background or equivalent research or lab experience
DataAnnotation Experimental Biologist, Drug Discovery Scientist, Computational BiologistUp to $125+/hrA master's or PhD (or current PhD candidacy) plus 3+ years of hands-on work after undergrad

Across Handshake AI, role pages list up to $120/hr for many expert roles, some higher (the Investment Banking Expert page lists up to $175/hr). Handshake's FAQ puts the overall range at "$17/hr to $150+/hr (depending on the project)." On micro1, Knackboard's quiz counts 11 roles in physics, biology, and chemistry at $45 to $200/hr (micro1 opportunities). DataAnnotation's FAQ says STEM projects start at $40 to $125+ per hour and require a master's or PhD in math, physics, biology, or chemistry, or a bachelor's degree plus 10+ years of professional experience.

Not every listing that names PhDs pays like an expert role. micro1's Research Evaluation Specialist (PhD or Masters / Researcher / Professor) listed $30 to $60/hr, and Handshake's STEM PhD (EU) role for EU and UK residents lists up to $48/hr.

Which PhD fields are in demand?

The sciences dominate. Chemistry, biology, physics, and math have dedicated roles on all four platforms, and drug discovery and computational biology have their own DataAnnotation pages. Computer science and engineering PhDs have roles too, though Handshake's sit at up to $75/hr, below its chemistry and biology roles.

Humanities and social science PhDs have fewer options. Handshake lists a Philosophy Expert role with a strict publication bar, and Mercor listed an Applied Philosophy Benchmark Specialist at $50 to $63/hr and a Humanities Expert pool at $45 to $60/hr. If your doctorate is in education or you teach at a college, see remote expert work for teachers for faculty roles.

Do you need to have finished your PhD?

Not always. Handshake's chemistry, math, physics, and philosophy pages accept people currently enrolled in a PhD program. DataAnnotation's experimental biology, drug discovery, and computational biology pages accept current PhD candidates. Mercor's STEM Researchers listing accepts anyone "currently pursuing or have completed an MSc or PhD," and micro1's physics listing accepts "advanced-stage PhD candidacy."

A master's opens some doors too: Handshake's biology role accepts an MS paired with industry experience. Several DataAnnotation STEM pages, including Chemist and Physicist, say "No degree required," as long as you have equivalent research experience.

If you are an international student, check your visa first. Handshake says F-1 students eligible for CPT or OPT may be able to join, but STEM OPT is not supported (Handshake AI).

Does where you live matter?

What are the downsides?

How do you get started?

  1. Pick by location first, using the list above.
  2. Lead your resume with your subfield, methods, and publications, with arXiv or DOI links. Some listings screen on them.
  3. Prepare for the screen. Mercor and micro1 use AI interviews, and DataAnnotation uses a written STEM assessment. See the guides on the Mercor AI interview, the micro1 AI interview, and the DataAnnotation assessment.
  4. Apply to more than one platform, since any single one can go quiet for weeks.

FAQ

Can I get paid for AI expert work while still in my PhD program?

Yes, on several platforms. As of Oct 21, 2026, Handshake AI's chemistry, math, physics, and philosophy roles accepted current doctoral students, DataAnnotation's experimental biology, drug discovery, and computational biology roles accepted current PhD candidates, and Mercor's STEM Researchers listing accepted people pursuing an MSc or PhD. F-1 students need CPT or OPT for Handshake AI, and STEM OPT is not supported.

How much do PhD-level remote expert roles pay?

As of Oct 21, 2026, Handshake AI listed Chemistry Expert up to $150/hr and Math or Physics Expert up to $75/hr, Mercor listed STEM PhD roles at $60 to $120/hr, micro1 listed 11 science roles at $45 to $200/hr, and DataAnnotation said STEM projects start at $40 to $125+ per hour. These are listed rates, not guaranteed earnings.

Do I need publications to qualify?

For some roles. Handshake AI's STEM Professor role asks for an h-index above 20, its Philosophy Expert role asks for a moral philosophy article in a top journal, micro1's Physics Expert listing asks for 2 to 5 recent publications, and Mercor's research physics roles want work published on the specific topic. Many other PhD roles ask only for doctoral study in the field.

Can I do PhD expert work from outside the US?

It depends on the platform. Handshake AI requires you to be based in the US, apart from region-specific roles such as STEM PhD (EU). Mercor's STEM PhDs listing accepts the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Some DataAnnotation science roles accept the US, Canada, and the UK, and micro1's Physics Expert listing is open worldwide.

Is this steady work?

No. All four platforms staff work project by project, and PhDs report projects ending with little notice and gaps between them. Treat it as flexible side income and apply to more than one platform.
