How much does Handshake AI pay?
Updated October 18, 2026
Short answer: Handshake says fellows earn from $17/hr to $150+/hr depending on the project, and on Oct 18, 2026 its role pages ranged from up to $17/hr for AI Evaluation Specialist to up to $175/hr for Investment Banking Expert. Pay is set per project and role, paid weekly through Stripe, and you have to be based in the US with work authorization Handshake supports.
What does Handshake AI pay by role?
Handshake posts a pay ceiling on every role page, written as "up to" an hourly rate, "depending on the project." Here is what the role pages showed on Oct 18, 2026, from highest to lowest:
| Role | Listed pay |
|---|---|
| Investment Banking Expert | Up to $175/hr |
| Quantitative Finance Researcher | Up to $150/hr |
| Chemistry Expert (PhD) | Up to $150/hr |
| Biology Expert (PhD) | Up to $125/hr |
| Game Developer/Designer | Up to $125/hr |
| PCB Tool Specialist | Up to $125/hr |
| Software Engineer | Up to $120/hr |
| Philosophy Expert (PhD) | Up to $120/hr |
| Mechanical Engineering Expert | Up to $100/hr |
| Civil Engineering Expert | Up to $90/hr |
| Energy Professional | Up to $80/hr |
| FP&A Analyst | Up to $80/hr |
| Math, Physics, or Machine Learning Expert (PhD) | Up to $75/hr |
| Generalist | Up to $30/hr |
| AI Evaluation Specialist | Up to $17/hr |
The pattern is simple: the more specialized and provable your expertise, the higher the ceiling. Finance, chemistry, and engineering roles with real industry or PhD-level depth sit near the top. The two broad roles open to almost any degree, Generalist and AI Evaluation Specialist, sit at the bottom.
What do the top-paying roles ask for?
The role pages are specific, and it is worth reading them before you apply, because a high ceiling usually comes with a high bar:
- Investment Banking Expert (up to $175/hr): at least 2 years as an Analyst or Associate in investment banking or private equity.
- Chemistry Expert (up to $150/hr): current PhD students, PhDs, or postdocs in chemistry or a close field. Handshake says most contributors work about 5 to 20 hours a week when they are on an active project.
- Software Engineer (up to $120/hr): at least 1 year of hands-on professional work, a bachelor's in computer science or a related field, and depth in backend systems, infrastructure, or systems programming.
- Philosophy Expert (up to $120/hr): a philosophy PhD (or current doctoral student) with at least one moral philosophy article in a top journal such as Ethics or Mind.
- Mechanical Engineering Expert (up to $100/hr): a BS, MS, or PhD in mechanical engineering or a close field, and work someone else actually built, tested, or approved. CNC programmers do not need a degree.
- Generalist (up to $30/hr): associate's, bachelor's, or master's students and grads in any field, with one assessment before you start.
Handshake's own fellowship FAQ on joinhandshake.com/ai sums the whole program up as "from $17/hr to $150+/hr (depending on the project)."
How is Handshake AI pay calculated?
Each project has its own pay model, and the Handshake help center describes four:
| Pay model | How you earn |
|---|---|
| Hourly | Hours logged on tasks you submit that week, times your rate, up to a per-task time cap |
| Pay per task | A set amount once a task clears review and reaches "Ready to Deliver" |
| Hybrid | Hourly pay plus a per-task amount when the task reaches Ready to Deliver |
| Progressive pay per task | Per-task pay released in stages: on submit, after each review round, and the largest share at Ready to Deliver |
Two details matter more than the headline rate. First, every hourly project has a maximum handling time per task, so if a task takes you longer than the cap, the extra time is not paid. Second, pay is based on verified work. Handshake's pay dashboard guide says final pay can differ from the estimate you see after logging time, because it compares your logged time with your activity on the tasking platform, checks approvals, and applies weekly or per-task caps. Time it judges inflated is not paid. Your rate is set per project and per role, so the same person can earn different rates on two projects.
What time is paid, and what is not?
According to Earning on Handshake AI, hourly projects pay for preparing, submitting, and revising tasks. Several things are not paid unless the Project Terms say otherwise:
- Onboarding, unless onboarding pay is listed in the Project Terms. Setting up payments and accounts is never paid.
- Optional meetings, office hours, and Slack or other community time.
- Time lost to internet, device, or login problems.
- AI Skills Studio missions, which Handshake describes as practice, not paid work.
On the plus side, some projects add onboarding or assessment pay, quality or speed bonuses, and referral pay. Handshake also says that if a project's pay terms change, it will tell you in advance and explain why.
When does Handshake AI pay?
Pay runs weekly. The payments processing article says the pay week runs from Monday 12:00 AM to Sunday 11:59 PM Pacific, and Handshake typically sends payouts to its pay partner by Wednesday afternoon of the following week. It can take about 48 hours to process and become available to withdraw, and Handshake says funds should reach your bank within 3 days of showing as "Paid," depending on your bank. Some projects use a different schedule, which will be spelled out in the Project Terms.
- Before your first payout: fill out a tax form (W-9 for most US people) and set up a payout method through Stripe. You can do both before you are placed on a project.
- If something looks wrong: Handshake asks you to wait until Friday at noon Pacific, since hourly pay and incentives can arrive as separate payments, and then file a pay dispute form.
- Taxes: you are a contractor and responsible for your own taxes.
Handshake started rolling out a weekly pay dashboard on Oct 14, 2026, for fellows on select projects, with a breakdown of base pay, incentives, deductions, and a reason for each adjustment.
Do you have to be in the US?
Yes, for nearly everyone. The fellowship page says you must be based in the US with work authorization Handshake can support, and the eligibility article adds that you need a Social Security Number or ITIN to finish onboarding and get paid. International participation is invite-only.
- Supported: US citizens and green card holders; F-1 students on CPT or OPT (with your school's DSO approval); H-4 with an EAD, L-2, DACA, refugees, asylum seekers or grantees, and TPS.
- Not supported: STEM OPT extensions, J-1, H-1B, TN, and H-4 without an EAD.
- Working while traveling: project work must be done from the US and its territories. You need written approval before working from abroad, and VPNs and remote desktop tools are not allowed.
What do fellows complain about?
The complaints are mostly about pay being cut or withheld after the fact, not about whether Handshake pays at all:
- Withheld pay after account suspensions. In March 2026, Business Insider reported that several contractors on OpenAI projects had their accounts suspended without warning and were denied pay after Handshake said they broke platform rules, such as task times far above benchmarks or working from outside the US. The contractors disputed this. Business Insider also reported that in one earlier unpaid-wages case, a court ruled the contractor should be paid $6,475.
- Active-time tracking. In May 2026, fellows on one project said in a widely upvoted Reddit thread that a new active-time measure cut their paychecks by 40% or more. Handshake's time tracking standards say the timer must be paused whenever you stop working and that logs can be reviewed for unusual patterns.
- Pauses and endings. Handshake has said on its Reddit community that projects pause or end when partner labs' needs change, not because of your performance, and that completed, approved work is still paid.
- Trustpilot. Handshake's joinhandshake.com profile showed 1.8 stars from 28 reviews on Oct 18, 2026. It mixes the main Handshake job site with the AI fellowship, and the company has not invited reviews recently. AI-related complaints include hours cut by a hidden timer, removals over suspected LLM use without seeing the flagged task, unpaid assessments, and no projects after onboarding.
How to protect your pay
- Read the Project Terms for the rate, pay model, time cap, and whether onboarding is paid before you start.
- Run the timer only while you are actively working, and stay inside the time cap.
- Keep your own simple log of tasks and hours so you have something to point to in a dispute.
- Do not use AI tools on tasks unless the project allows it in writing, and do not work from abroad without approval.
