Handshake AI vs Mercor
Updated October 19, 2026
Short answer: Handshake AI is a fellowship for people based in the US: you sign up, finish any required assessment, and wait to be matched to a project. Its role pages list up to $120/hr for many expert roles, some higher, such as Investment Banking Expert at up to $175/hr. Mercor accepts people in many countries, screens you with an AI interview for each listing, and posts a rate on every listing, such as Generalist at $50 to $60/hour on Oct 19, 2026 (the listing requires a Mac). Both pay weekly, mainly through Stripe.

Who is each one better for?
Handshake AI tends to suit people in the US, especially students, recent grads, PhD students, and early-career professionals. Every major is welcome on the Generalist track (up to $30/hr), and specialist roles in finance, the sciences, engineering, and software pay more. There is no minimum number of hours, and you do not apply listing by listing: once your profile and assessment are done, Handshake matches you to projects.
Mercor tends to suit people outside the US, and professionals whose credentials match one of its talent networks, such as lawyers, physicians, nurses, financial analysts, and engineers. You get a clearer contract up front, with a rate, a weekly hour cap, and a weekly payout, in exchange for software time tracking and an AI interview for each listing.
If you are based in the US and have a specialty both list, you can apply to both. They are separate companies with separate screening.
How does the pay compare by role?
Handshake posts an "up to" ceiling on every role page, "depending on the project." Here is a selection from Oct 19, 2026:
| Handshake AI role | Listed pay |
|---|---|
| Investment Banking Expert | Up to $175/hr |
| Quantitative Finance Researcher | Up to $150/hr |
| Chemistry Expert (PhD) | Up to $150/hr |
| Biology Expert (PhD) | Up to $125/hr |
| Software Engineer | Up to $120/hr |
| Mechanical Engineering Expert | Up to $100/hr |
| Civil Engineering Expert | Up to $90/hr |
| FP&A Analyst | Up to $80/hr |
| Math, Physics, or Machine Learning Expert (PhD) | Up to $75/hr |
| Generalist | Up to $30/hr |
Handshake's own fellowship page sums the program up as "from $17/hr to $150+/hr (depending on the project)." Mercor shows a range on every listing on its explore page instead. Using each site's own listings on Oct 19, 2026:
- Finance: Handshake's Investment Banking Expert up to $175/hr and Quantitative Finance Researcher up to $150/hr, vs Mercor's Financial Analyst Talent Network at $60 to $180/hour.
- Software: Handshake's Software Engineer up to $120/hr, vs Mercor's engineering talent networks at $70 to $150/hour and its Software and Firmware Engineering Experts role at $100 to $120/hour.
- Sciences: Handshake's Chemistry Expert up to $150/hr and Biology Expert up to $125/hr (both PhD level), vs Mercor's Chemist, Biologist, and Physicist networks at $60 to $80/hour and some specialist chemistry roles at $65 to $75 per task.
- Generalists: Handshake's Generalist up to $30/hr, open to associate's, bachelor's, and master's students and grads, vs Mercor's Generalist at $50 to $60/hour, which requires a Mac and either current master's study or 2 to 3 years of experience plus a bachelor's.
An "up to" figure is a ceiling and a Mercor range is the band for that listing. Neither is what a typical person earns in a week. For more detail, see how much Handshake AI pays and how much Mercor pays.
How do you get in?
Handshake AI: you sign up, complete your profile, verify your identity, and take any assessment your track requires. The Generalist page, for example, says you get a brief training and take a single assessment before starting. Projects are not self-serve: the help center says the Handshake AI team matches fellows to projects, and the most important thing you can do is complete your profile and any required assessments. According to Handshake's application guide, there is no fixed timeline for an invitation. When one comes, the email covers the project, its estimated length, time commitment, and pay. Some projects ask for a portfolio or work samples, then you are selected, finish project onboarding and training, and set up Stripe after your first task.
Mercor: you apply to a listing or talent network with your resume and finish its steps, usually a recorded AI interview of about 20 minutes. You can practice for free as often as you like and retake an official interview up to three times (interview FAQ). The Generalist listing describes a 3-minute AI conversation plus a brief paid assessment, with an answer within a few days. An offer then means signing contracts, a tax form, ID and background checks, and installing Insightful (onboarding guide).
How do hours and pay rules differ?
Handshake AI projects use one of four pay models: hourly, pay per task, a hybrid of both, or progressive pay per task. Hourly projects cap the paid time per task. Handshake's pay dashboard guide says final pay is based on verified work and can differ from the estimate you see. Onboarding, optional meetings, and time lost to tech problems are not paid unless the Project Terms say otherwise (what is paid). Its time tracking standards say to pause the timer whenever you stop working.
Mercor mostly uses hourly contracts with a weekly cap. Hours must be logged in Insightful, and Mercor's pay policy says legitimate logged time is paid even if quality is low, though quality affects whether you stay on the project. Hours can be withheld only for policy violations, spam, or time logged while not working, after a human review.
When do you get paid?
Handshake AI: the payments article says the pay week runs from Monday 12:00 AM to Sunday 11:59 PM Pacific, Handshake typically sends payouts to its pay partner by Wednesday afternoon of the next week, and processing can take about 48 hours. Funds should reach your bank within 3 days of showing as "Paid," depending on your bank.
Mercor: the pay week runs from Saturday to Friday on India Standard Time, payouts are processed by the end of Wednesday Pacific time, and most funds arrive Thursday. Stripe is the default and Wise covers six countries where Stripe is not available. Stripe holds your first payout for 7 days.
Neither withholds taxes; you are a contractor on both.
What are the honest downsides?
Handshake AI: the main complaints are about pay that is cut or withheld after the fact. In March 2026, Business Insider reported that some contractors on OpenAI projects had their accounts suspended and pay denied after Handshake said they broke platform rules, which the contractors disputed. In May 2026, fellows in a widely upvoted Reddit thread said a new active-time measure cut their paychecks by 40% or more. Handshake's help center says projects "may be paused or closed with little notice" based on partner labs' needs. Its Trustpilot page showed 1.8 stars from 28 reviews on Oct 19, 2026, 86% of them one-star, though that page mixes the main Handshake job site with the fellowship. AI-related complaints there include removal over suspected chatbot use without seeing the flagged task, hours of unpaid training, and no projects after onboarding.
Mercor: projects can end suddenly, as when Mercor ended a Meta project with more than 5,000 contractors in November 2025 and offered a lower-paid replacement (Business Insider). One-star reviews on its Trustpilot profile describe weekly caps cut to zero, sudden offboarding, and rejections after many assessments, while happy reviewers praise on-time weekly pay. Mercor also had a data breach in March 2026 and faces a proposed class action over contractor classification and deducted hours (White v. Mercor.io Corporation), which are allegations, not findings.
Which should you try first?
- Try Handshake AI first if you live in the US, you are a student, recent grad, or PhD, and you want no minimum hours.
- Try Mercor first if you live outside the US, or you are a licensed or experienced professional who fits one of its talent networks and wants a weekly contract.
- Do both if you are in the US with a specialty both list. Keep your own log of tasks and hours on each, and read every project's terms before you start.
