What remote expert work can accountants and CPAs get paid for?

Can accountants get paid for their expertise remotely?
Yes. AI labs pay accountants to write accounting and tax problems, check model answers against GAAP, ASC standards, and the tax code, and write the correct treatment. As of Oct 21, 2026, DataAnnotation had seven accounting role pages, each listing up to $125+/hr, Mercor listed a finance pool that covers accounting and auditing at $60 to $180/hr, and micro1 listed 3 accounting roles at $30 to $120/hr. Hands-on experience matters more than a CPA on most listings.
Accounting is a good fit for this kind of work because the answers can be checked. A model can sound sure of itself and still miss a phaseout or misapply a standard, and an experienced accountant spots that fast. This guide covers which of the platforms Knackboard tracks list accounting roles, what they pay, and what they ask for. Every rate was checked on the platform's own pages on Oct 21, 2026. Rates are listed ranges or ceilings, not what you will earn.
What does the work involve?
DataAnnotation's Tax Accountant page gives a clear picture. You draft prompts that test tax treatment, provision calculations, entity structuring, and compliance across federal and state rules. Then you review AI answers for outdated code sections, missed phaseouts, wrong entity treatment, and book-tax differences, and write the correct treatment "with the working shown clearly."
Mercor's Finance Expert pool describes the same pattern: writing a problem from work you have done, "with the filings, the assumptions, and the constraints," grading whether a model's work ties and whether "the accounting treatment is right," and flagging output that "looks clean on the page and would not pass review." micro1's Senior Accountant Expert listing adds reviewing financial statements, critiquing audit procedures, and checking tax compliance documentation.
Which DataAnnotation roles fit accountants?
DataAnnotation's role board had an Accounting category with seven roles on Oct 21, 2026. Each role page listed pay of up to $125+/hr "depending on task difficulty and specialization."
| Role page | What it asks for | Listed pay |
|---|---|---|
| Accountant | A CPA, ACCA, or equivalent training, or professional accounting experience | Up to $125+/hr |
| Tax Accountant | Hands-on corporate, individual, or provision (ASC 740) tax work | Up to $125+/hr |
| Auditor | External, internal, or controls and SOX audit experience | Up to $125+/hr |
| Corporate Accountant | Corporate accounting or controllership; GAAP, the close, and consolidations | Up to $125+/hr |
| Public Accountant | Public accounting in audit, assurance, or tax; GAAP and GAAS | Up to $125+/hr |
| Financial Reporting Manager | Technical accounting or SEC reporting under US GAAP | Up to $125+/hr |
| FP&A Analyst | Planning, forecasting, or management reporting; driver-based models | Up to $125+/hr |
Every page except Accountant says "No degree required," and all of them stress clear written English. The pages list weekly payouts, and the FAQ says payments go through PayPal. The FAQ says Professional track projects start at $40 to $125+ per hour and describes them as "specialized work requiring licensed credentials in law, finance, or medicine," so expect it to weigh credentials more heavily than the role pages suggest. The homepage showed how many people each role had "hired recently," from 58 for Accountant to 21 for Financial Reporting Manager. That is a rough demand signal, not a promise of work.
What does Mercor list for accountants?
- Finance Expert pool, listed $60 to $180/hr. It names accounting and auditing alongside corporate finance, asset management, and insurance. The listing says rates "have posted from $60 to $180 an hour, set per project." You apply with a resume and take an AI interview of about 20 minutes, and Mercor reaches out when a project fits, "within a week or several months."
- Financial Analyst Talent Network, listed $60 to $180/hr, for modeling, forecasting, statement analysis, and budgeting experience.
- Excel Expert, Finance, listed $70 to $100/hr. A US-only W-2 role through Cincinnatus LLC that asks for 40 hours a week on weekdays. It targets finance modelers, but says accounting and FP&A backgrounds are also considered.
- Accounting and Audit Domain Expert, listed $60 to $100/hr. This one is not remote. It is a full-time, hybrid W-2 role in the Bay Area with on-site days, and the listing says relocation is at your own cost.
Mercor pays weekly, mainly through Stripe, according to its pay policy. For more on its rates, see how much Mercor pays.
What does micro1 list for accountants?
Knackboard's quiz counts 3 accounting roles on micro1 at $30 to $120/hr. On the micro1 opportunities listing on Oct 21, 2026, they were:
- Senior Accountant Expert, $60 to $120/hr. Remote and US-based. It asks for a bachelor's in accounting, finance, or economics, substantial experience preparing and auditing financial statements, and past titles such as CPA, cost accountant, or internal auditor. A CPA, CMA, or CIA is preferred.
- Accountant / Auditor, $50 to $70/hr.
- Generalist, U.S. Tax Workflow Evaluation, $30 to $110/hr. A short-term project that requires connecting your own financial accounts through Plaid, plus your personal Gmail and Google Drive, and sharing your own tax documents. Read that carefully before applying.
micro1 pays through Deel on two pay periods a month, the 1st to the 15th and the 16th to month end (micro1 expert library). See how much micro1 pays by field for the full breakdown.
What about Handshake AI?
Handshake AI is thinner here. Knackboard found no general accountant or CPA role on its opportunities page on Oct 21, 2026. The closest fits were Energy Accountant (up to $85/hr, for utility billing and metering experience with tools such as Oracle CC&B or SAP), FP&A Analyst (up to $80/hr, retail FP&A), and Corporate Finance Analyst (up to $80/hr, corporate finance, M&A, or treasury). Its Finance Expert role lists up to $150/hr and accepts an accounting degree, but asks for investing, hedge fund, or investment banking depth. Across Handshake AI, role pages list up to $120/hr for many expert roles, some higher, and you must be based in the US (Handshake AI).
Do you need a CPA?
Usually not, but it helps. DataAnnotation's Accountant page accepts "CPA, ACCA, or equivalent training, or professional accounting experience," and its other accounting pages ask for hands-on experience rather than a license. Mercor's finance pool asks for "professional experience in a finance or accounting discipline." micro1's senior role prefers a CPA, CMA, or CIA "or equivalent practical experience." What gets you matched is specific, recent experience, so name your standards (ASC 606, ASC 740, SOX, GAAS) and systems on your resume.
Does it fit around busy season?
It can, because the work is flexible and remote. One SEC reporting accountant in r/Accounting (Sep 2026) said they took it on during slow periods and reported a Mercor project at $90/hr with task bonuses and a DataAnnotation project at $75/hr. That is one person's report, not a typical result. The catch is that projects follow the labs' timelines, so the busiest stretch of AI work may land in your busy season.
What are the downsides?
- You are a contractor. DataAnnotation and micro1 roles are independent contractor work, so you handle your own taxes and get no benefits. The Mercor W-2 roles above are the exception.
- Hours are not guaranteed. Pools and role boards can go quiet for weeks, and "up to" is a ceiling.
- Projects end. Mercor ended a Meta project with more than 5,000 contractors in November 2025 and offered a lower-paid replacement (Business Insider).
- Pay and quality disputes. Business Insider reported in 2026 that some Handshake AI contractors had accounts suspended and pay withheld over rule violations they disputed.
- Privacy. Some tax projects ask for access to your own accounts and documents, like the micro1 tax workflow role above.
- Professional duties. Never paste client data into a task, and check your firm's policy on outside work before you start.
