Can lawyers get paid remotely for what they know?
Yes. Lawyers can get paid remotely for legal expertise on micro1, Mercor, DataAnnotation, and Handshake AI, which all list legal roles, and through legal staffing platforms such as Axiom and LAWCLERK. The work differs: the first four pay you to write and grade legal tasks for AI models, while Axiom and LAWCLERK place you on real client or law firm matters. As of Oct 23, 2026:
- micro1: 48 hourly roles in its law category, from $50-70/h for entry roles up to $140-400/h for some specialist attorney roles.
- Mercor: the Lawyer Talent Network was listed at $60 to $150/hr.
- DataAnnotation: the Attorney role page lists up to $125+/hr.
- Handshake AI: the Lawyers page lists up to $110/hr and the Legal Professionals page up to $150/hr.
None of these is a guaranteed income. Each platform decides who qualifies and when projects open, and listed pay is a range for a role, not what most people earn. The sections below quote each platform's own pages, with the date we checked them.
Platforms and listed pay for lawyers
All figures below were checked on Oct 23, 2026, in each platform's own wording.
| Platform | Legal roles | Listed pay |
|---|---|---|
| micro1 | 48 hourly roles in the law category: litigation, contracts, corporate, tax, employment, regulatory, and law student cite-checking | From $50-70/h to $140-400/h, by role |
| Mercor | Lawyer Talent Network and Legal Expert network | Listed $60 to $150/hr |
| DataAnnotation | Attorney, plus Legal Expert, Litigation Attorney, and Corporate Attorney | Up to $125+/hr |
| Handshake AI | Lawyers (JD required) and Legal Professionals (including paralegals and law clerks) | Up to $110/hr and up to $150/hr |
micro1 law roles
On Oct 23, 2026, micro1's public job listing showed 49 roles in its law category, 48 of them hourly. micro1 shows each role's pay as a range, such as "$90-110/h". Examples from that day:
- Law Review Cite-Checker: $50-80/h (aimed at law students and recent JDs)
- Attorney: $90-110/h
- Litigation Attorney: $80-170/h
- Derivatives Counsel (ISDA Specialist): $150-200/h
- AI Legal Fellow, Litigation and Motion Practice: $150-300/h
- Corporate Attorney (BigLaw Firms): $140-400/h
The $400 tops all came from 14 specialist attorney roles posted on Oct 22, 2026. Most of the rest topped out between $70 and $180/h. One listing that day showed "$140-4050/h", which looks like a typo, so we left it out. The Knackboard quiz's micro1 law card was last refreshed on Oct 20, 2026, when micro1 listed 33 hourly law roles at $50 to $350/hr, so its count can lag the live listing. Mercor lawyer listings
Mercor's Lawyer Talent Network was listed at $60-$150 / hr, part-time and remote, on Oct 23, 2026. Mercor calls it "an open application for future contract opportunities", not a specific job. Its separate Legal Expert listing, also listed at $60-$150 / hr, says "Listings across it have posted from $60 to $150 an hour, set per project by scope and depth," and that a match "can be within a week or several months."
Both listings say "Payments are weekly on Stripe or Wise based on services rendered" and "We are unable to support H1-B or STEM OPT candidates at this time." They also say the work "will not involve access to confidential or proprietary information from any employer, client, or institution," which matters if you are weighing it against client duties.
DataAnnotation Attorney role
DataAnnotation's Attorney role page lists "Up to $125+/hr depending on task difficulty and specialization" (checked Oct 23, 2026). It asks for a "JD or equivalent, with practice experience or strong academic background," and describes the work as reviewing AI output "for invented citations, misapplied precedent, and jurisdictional errors." The page lists the role as remote, flexible hours, independent contractor, with weekly payouts. Its similar roles, Legal Expert, Litigation Attorney, and Corporate Attorney, each list up to $125+/hr.
Handshake AI legal roles
Handshake AI says many expert roles pay up to $120/hr, some higher. For legal work on Oct 23, 2026:
- Lawyers: "Up to $110/hr", "Depending on the project". It asks for a JD from an accredited law school and an "Active or previously active law license in good standing," and says "Many contributors work approximately 5–20 hours per week when assigned to an active project."
- Legal Professionals: "Up to $150/hr", "Depending on the project". It asks for at least 4 years of work experience in roles such as lawyer, paralegal, legal assistant, legal secretary, or judicial law clerk.
Both pages say "STEM OPT is not supported." Handshake AI is built around US-based contributors; see is Handshake AI legit for its work authorization rules.
How does this compare with Axiom and LAWCLERK?
Axiom and LAWCLERK place you on real legal work for clients, not AI training tasks, and their terms are different.
- Axiom places lawyers with in-house legal teams. Its careers page for lawyers says that after you match with a client engagement and finish onboarding, "you become an Axiom employee," and that its interview process "typically takes about two weeks." US postings such as its Derivatives Attorney / ISDA Negotiator listing state: "The estimated total compensation for full-time Axiom attorney roles is $104,500-325,000 per year." We found no published hourly rate for part-time Axiom work.
- LAWCLERK is a marketplace where law firms hire freelance attorneys. Its freelance FAQ says it is open to "U.S. licensed attorneys admitted to practice in at least one state and in good standing." Its getting paid page says you set your own hourly rate within an experience band, "junior $90 to $120, mid-level $120 to $160, senior $160+," with hourly work paid weekly by direct deposit and flat-fee projects paid when the firm accepts the work.
The trade-off: Axiom and LAWCLERK use your license on client matters and can mean steadier, longer engagements, but they need a US bar admission (LAWCLERK) or a hiring process and client match (Axiom). The AI platforms above take smaller, flexible blocks of time and do not involve client representation, but projects open and close without notice. All six were checked on Oct 23, 2026.
Who tends to fit
Practicing attorneys, in-house counsel, former BigLaw associates, and experienced paralegals fit most of these roles. Law students and recent JDs can look at micro1's cite-checking roles. If you have a job at a firm, check its outside-work policy before you start. In the Knackboard quiz, choose law as your field and say if you are licensed, so your matches account for it.
Pay figures are the ranges each platform lists, not guaranteed earnings. Each platform decides who qualifies, which projects are open, and final pay. Check the current listing before applying.
